The Basics of Photography

Jul 10, 2009 Author: admin | Filed under: General Photography

You know what it means for a team to go into what is called a rebuiling year. This is done to correct bad habits and train new people when owners or coaches decide it just needs to be done.  And invariably, what team leadership says when they go into such a time is that they are going “back to basics.”

Sometimes it’s good for us as photographers to go back to basics of digital photography .The basics are the place to start if you want to learn the ropes especially if you are just getting started in the world of photography. You need to know the basics that all the professionals know about the craft of photograghy.

Anyone can take pictures.  I attended a wedding reception where the wedding party left a disposable digital camera on each table at the reception for guests to snap photos.  Before the evening was over, it was the children who were running around taking pictures of everything from the dirty dishes to their own underwear.  These were not photographers and while those pictures will no doubt get a few chuckles, these are not the kind of professional pictures people want for their long-term memories.

Obviously, the cornerstone of photography basics is the camera.  When you see a camera geek walking around with enough equipment on his neck to launch a space shuttle, you get the impression that cameras are phenomenally complex, more than mere mortals can grasp. If you notice professionals you’ll see them working with light weight, portable and easy to operate cameras. The reason is that aperture and shutter speed are the basics of operating a camera.

Don’t be bothered by fancy terms. The camera lens lets lgiht into the camera and how wide open it is set to is called the aperture.  And shutter speed is just how long you let the light come in to affect the picture.  For getting a shot of a fast moving event, you want a wide aperture to let in a lot of light but a short shutter speed so you capture the event quickly and close the window so the picture is caught before more light hurts the quality.

Photography is simply all about light.  You can and will get learn a lot about lenses and flash photography and other ways to turn the control over the lighting of a shot to you.Make a willingness to never stop learning a major core skill in your photography efforts.  The better and more sophisticated you get in your ability to work with the equipment, the more you will learn and the more you will want to learn.

You can get a greater control over these basic controls of the camera such as aperture and shutter speed by learning how to switch from automatic settings to manual settings.Every camera has automatic settings but they were only created for the general public because they are not really interested in learning the basics.  So they give you some basic settings like landscape, portrait and sports settings.  By switching to manual, you can learn what settings work best in different situations.

Practice is the most important digital photography basics in becoming a great photographer.Take the time to play with and learn your equipment.  Take it to situations and take photos with different aperture and shutter speed settings, in outdoor and indoor settings and different orientations to light.  Don’t get upset when some shots don’t work.  That’s part of the learning curve.

By learning by doing, you will build your confidence in your work and eventually become a great photographer.  But don’t get cocky, there is always more to learn. This one of the fun things with photography?

A Great Photography Tip

Jul 8, 2009 Author: admin | Filed under: General Photography

One of the many features found on modern digital cameras is the ability to allow the owner to try black and white photography. Any of these methods can be used to achieve the classic black and white look that can impress any viewer. Black and white photos are also perfect for portraits and candid shots of young children. If you want of make your black and white photos to be more striking, you can frame them in groups in your wall.

It’s basically the forerunner of pictograph dimension of photo shooting. This photography concentrates sticking in important life aspects beyond the radical changes of artistic movement in the industrial age. Naturalist photography has played a major role in the society where self-consciousness and regard had diminished.

Do you want to become a better photographer, but you think that you need to wait until you can afford the best photography equipment or have the talent to take great pictures? For my first wedding photography, I decided to buy and Olympus SP-510 UZ, a lot of people said this wouldn’t be the right camera for me simply because it was really jumping into the deep end without a life preserver. You have to be prepared to catch that perfect moment because it can come and go in a heart beat. The quality of the lens and size of the sensor can also affect the quality of digital photographs.

It has remained to hold on to great features such as quality photos in creation of portraits. This photography highly regarded and recognized for its quality and professionalism in the field of portrait making. Their trick is they have remained focus on certain types of photo shoots and they have blended modern technology with skills and experience to work for their own good. Some common items will include use of composite prints that consist of combined graphics and multiple pictures.

But natural landscape is not the only kind of landscape available. Many of this kinds of landscape photography have become boring because too many photographers are doing it.

Adobe Photoshop CS4

Jul 7, 2009 Author: admin | Filed under: General Photography

There has never been a time in the history of digital photography when we can achieve such great results in editing since we entered the digital age.  And while there are a myriad of tools that the computer and Internet have made available to us to enhance and change the images that come from a photo shoot, none can top the popularity and power of Adobe Photoshop. This digital photography editing softwarehas become so synonymous with photo editing that the word “Photoshop” has become a verb meaning to enhance or alter an image.

We can “Photoshop in” new outfits, accessories or even people to a shot where it was just not possible before.  So if you want a picture of you shaking hands with the president, you don’t have to go to Washington to get it, just “Photoshop” your image into the image of the president and it will look as real as if you had been there.

Similarly, we can “Photoshop” out things from a picture we don’t want to see there anymore. You can remove physical flaws with ease. You can even remove your noisy brother in law from the background of the shot. This digital photography is so sophisticated that you will be able to alter any image and not ever be able to tell it.

Photoshop has become such a de facto standard for photo processing that if you are setting up a photography studio or business, a copy of the software is as necessary as Microsoft word or PowerPoint.A good thing about Photoshop is that it is available everywhere and there are many people who know how to use it.  So if you feel insecure about learning yet another computer application, you can probably find a college student, someone at the high school or maybe the junior high that knows Photoshop in and out and can help you jump start your use of the software as well.

The dominate software has not always been Photoshop. Two brothers, John and Thomas Knoll created this program in 1989.the market became aware of the potential of this software shortly after the brothers created it for their person use.John and Thomas were pretty smart so the founded a company called Adobe in 1990.

Adobe has been a shining example of how to achieve success in the age of the Internet.I don’t know of anyone today is not aware of Adobe.I don’t think there is a computer working today that does not have a free copy of Adobe reader on it.This little company has created and then taken over a particular market of online business with the PDF format.

To really become skilled at using Photoshop, the first thing to do is probably find a copy to play with. You usually can find Photoshop, like most computer applications, on someones computer that will allow you to play with the software a bit.  Then if your friend is a wizard at Photoshop, let him or her show you some of the real “wiz-bang” things they can do with Photoshop using the same menus you were just tinkering with.It is real easy to allow a little Saturday afternoon photography spree to create and Photoshop addict out of you forever.

When you are done you will need to download a copy for yourself. There are evaluation versions that give you most of the features available. You only need this is you are not sure you’ll be buying a copy.Photoshop dominates this market so you will want to buy a copy but make sure you get a licensed copy to avoid some frustration.  Now, you will probably find yourself playing with the software for long hours just having fun and that’s great.  But don’t overlook the value of taking some organized classes in photo editing using Adobe Photoshop.Photoshop classes can show you shortcuts on how to get the most our of the software.

After you learn this great software program the only limit you will have is your imagination in using this tool to make pictures better for your customers. You will be able to proudly proclaim, that’s alright, I can fix that in Photoshop.”.”

Where To Find The Best Photo Printing Services

Jul 6, 2009 Author: admin | Filed under: General Photography

Before, during those days where there are no commercially-available digital cameras, if you want to send some pictures to your loved one across the seas or thousands of miles away, you need to develop those pictures by going to your nearest photo center and then, mail those pictures. But now, things can really come in handy because of digital cameras and the Internet. After taking those pictures, all you have to do is to upload these pictures on any photo printing services website and they can print your photos and have them delivered to you or to your relatives thousands of miles away in days. You might also be interested in letting them organize your photos in an album and have them delivered in no time at all.

These are just some of the benefits that you can enjoy when you avails the services of an online photo service shop. A personal friend, one time, has celebrated his son’s birthday. Of course, there would be lots of photo-shoots happening all the time. After a long day of partying, he uploaded all of those pictures on the Internet and have them printed by an online photo service of his choice, requested to put them and organize them in a photo book before mailing it back to him and some copies to their relatives and friends living far away. In the shortest possible time, the photos he uploaded were finally delivered to him, placed in an organized manner in a photo printing book and the same copies were also received by these recipients.

It’s really cool and neat to have these online photo service centers. You don’t have to worry about high costs of printing your own images and you don’t have to worry putting them in photo albums and then, deliver it to your relatives. An online photo service is sufficient enough to do all these things while you just wait at home or while doing something else.

Choosing the Right Digital Camera Printer

Jul 5, 2009 Author: admin | Filed under: General Photography

Digital camer printers are very popular in the United States as well as other parts of the world The greatest thing about owning your own printer is being able to get the job done at home. With such a wide variety of digital camera printers available, it is important to understand what your personal needs are before you select a printer. Before spending any money on a new printer make sure it’s the right printer for your personal needs.

Tips on Choosing The Right Digital Camera Printer

1. Will your printer need to multitask? When it comes time for printing, will you need a printer for more than just printing images? Perhaps one that can also print documents etc..?

2. Is your main focus printing photographs? If so, there are a variety of digital camera printers that are totally geared toward these types of printing tasks. And just these types of functions. Just remember, you will not be able to print out documents on these types of printers.

3. What is the quality that you are going to want in your prints? High quality prints require high quality paper as well as a printer that can print either amateur quality or professional quality prints.

When you are looking for your printer online, many times you can select to read other peoples personal reviews on the items. Be sure to look closely at “why” they did or did not like the printer. There are times when you need to really consider why someone gave a bad review. It may not be because the item was bad. It may be because the item did not have all the funtions that they actually needed. This is why it is important to know what you want and in the case of a printer, what that printer can do, before you make your selection.

The Internet is a great place to gain a lot of information, but having personal help can be even more beneficial. It is helpful to make a trip to your local BestBuy or other office supply store and speak to someone knowledgeable on digital camera printers.

Finally, it is good to ask the question, “Is the cost of the printing at home worth it?”? High quality prints will require high quality paper as well as a lot of ink. Printing out a few pictures now and then on your home printer is a great way to get the job done. However, it is actually cheaper to use a place like Costco to print out large quantities of photographs and images when you consider the cost of the paper and ink.

Easy To Do Photography Lighting Tips

Jul 4, 2009 Author: admin | Filed under: General Photography

In this day and age of digital cameras, you’ve probably heard or thought that all you have to do is push the button and great pictures magically appear.  Not so fast. The fact of the matter is, you can have the best digital camera, but if you have no clue in what you are doing, you are gonna take horrible shots.

Well, I’d love to share with you some great advice in photography to help improve your skills.  These tips are coming from years of experience as a San Diego wedding photographer. These tips are all about the lighting and they will some of biggest reasons for you success in taking photographs.

First great tip in regards to lighting. Now if the shots you will take are going to be outdoors during the day, the natural sunlight will be some of the best lighting possible.  Now you are probably thinking, “that’s easy, when you are a San Diego photographer since it is always shiny there”, when in actuality really bright sunlight can cast harsh shadows.  Or it can wash out the details in faces if the sun is overhead.

Overall, what you will want to do is to have the sun behind you when you take most of the shots.  This prevents the harsh shadows that can be caused by the sun.But there will be those times and instances when you want different angles to get those shadows into the shots.

Now that we have addressed the shots during the day, what about those night shots?

The key to taking photos at night is turning off your flash.  Of course if it is pitch black you will need it, but for times when there is lighting, you want to use the lighting that is around, but you have to make sure you set your shutter speeds slower to let in enough light. Also, stay steady when you are taking your photograph or you will cause the picture to blur.  Doing these couple of tricks can make a dramatic difference when taking night shots.

The final piece of advice to use for lighting is using the golden hour to capture great shots. Now there is a time that photographers refer to as the “golden hour” or “magic hour”, and that is during sunrise and sunset.

These times of day you wll be able to capture great shots because you will get the more warmer and inviting colors.  You will be able to capture that golden lighting you won’t catch any other time of day.

There you go.Probably the biggest tip in taking beautiful photos is to make use of the natural lighting around you.  Knowing what techniques to use for different parts of the day, or just scheduling a photo shoots to capture those times of day will help you become an excellent photographer.

Digital Photography: Getting Your Groove Back

Jul 2, 2009 Author: admin | Filed under: General Photography

Learning digital photography is one of the most rewarding things you can do with your life. There are digital photography tutorials available to you the will help you to learn to take great digital photos and even teach you how to make a career out of taking great pictures. Many of these great helps are available to you online. You can take advantage of and learn from others expertise very easily. You can learn the mechanics of taking great digital photos in a relatively short period of time.

Creative photography however, may be the most demanding of all the photographic diciplines.  That is because unlike commercial photography, your boss is your creative imagination and the artistic marketplace.  And who knows from one week to the next what is considered artistic and what isn’t.

It isn’t just poetic license that we are using when we talk about you following your creative muse when you use your photography as an expression of your art.  You can look at a hundred settings and scenes and only you can know if any have the raw materials for a great artistic piece using your camera.  It’s a huge drain on your emotional system and your creative side but it is also one of the most satisfying things you can do.  And if you can make a living at it, so much the better.

But one of the problems any artist has is when that muse just won’t talk to you for a while.  Never mind if you have orders in or deadlines that mean that you have to be creative on a schedule.  She just won’t cooperate.  So we need some tricks to get around these little dry spells and ways to can coax that muse back to work.

One trick is to use the normal highs and lows of your creative side.  You know that when it comes to inspiration, its either feast or famine.  Sometimes the creativity explodes like a volcano and you have to pick and choose only the best stuff to work on right away.  Well when that flow is exploding, take some time and get some of that inspiration recorded.  An inspiration journal either on paper or on tape can be used to capture it as fast as it comes out of that side of your soul.

Now this is where you are outsmarting that muse.  When the well dries up, that inspiration journal can carry you through.  You can start plucking the ideas out of there and developing them.  Don’t worry if you don’t “feel” creative.  You can ride the momentum of your creative high to keep your work moving forward.

The other great thing about using your journal is often reading your inspiration from when things were popping in your imagination, that will prime the pump and get the fresh inspiration going again.

Above all, when you feel your creative engines grind to a halt, don’t panic .  Sometimes a day or two of rest will turn things around dramtically.  Or go and see some other artistic work done by other photographers or artists at the local museum.  Seeing your fellow artists best work can do wonders to jumpstart the flow of ideas and creative juices coming your way again.

Creative funks are as much a part of the process of creativity as the flow of ideas are.  So give yourself permission to go through dry spells and don’t run yourself down about it.  A trip into your archives to review your best work from the past is a great moral booster and it will help you remember that, yes, you are a creative person and, yes, you have done good work before and so, yes, you will do good work again.

The final trick is to give yourself permission to create some crap.  In other words, don’t stifle the restarting of your creative mind by holding it to too high a standard of quality in every idea you get.  You know from previous times of great creative flow that the good ideas come out with the bad.  It doesn’t help to try to edit them as they flow.  So by telling yourself, I am going to go make some bad art, that liberates your creative side to just be free to express as it wills.  It could be that such a trick may be all it takes to unstop the pipe and get the creativity going again.

What helped me get my creativity back on track was I went back to the basics. I began by refreshing my skills in proper settings and techniques for photographing birds, animals, sunsets and landscapes, taking close-ups and capturing the personality of people in my photographs. I went through a digital photography tutorial online.

Remember, your creativity will flow again and you need to take steps to maintain the confidence that it will.  And when it does the creative photography you start producing will be as good or better than anything you have done before.

Interested in Buying a Coolpix P80 Camera?

Jul 1, 2009 Author: admin | Filed under: General Photography

Why do so many folks who are looking for state-of-the-art performance digital cameras with masses of advanced features buy CoolPix P80 cameras? It’s because, despite its diminutive size and affordable price tag, these cameras get the activity done. The P80 model is part of the Nikon CoolPix Performance Series after all. And it absolutely performs, sometimes above and beyond what you might foresee. There was a moment when, in order to get a camera with the features you required to produce near professional quality pictures, you had to sacrifice something, namely compact size. But the P80 has a lot of capacity packed into a small, streamlined package.

One of the primary reasons size. But the P80 digital cameras is the telephoto lens. Before the P80 came along, cameras this small just didn’t have telephoto lenses. In order to enjoy the benefits of that feature, you had to accept that you would be lugging around a camera that was a little bulkier and more cumbersome than you liked. Then along came the P80, which Nikon called “The World’s Most Compact Super-telephoto Camera.” And it wasn’t misleading.  In fact, the P80 is equipped with an 18x Optical Wide-Angle Zoom NIKKOR Lens. Pretty impressive considering the camera’s size. With this lens, you can capture everything from the sweeping grandeur of the Grand Canyon, to a bee setting advertising. In reality, the petal of a flower.

Another of this camera’s ample features is Optical Vibration Reduction Image Stabilization. Which basically means the camera compensates for shaky or unstable conditions. More than one great image has been ruined because the photography was jostled by something. Maybe they were in a car driving over shoddy roads, or on a yacht sailing on choppy waters. Whatever the cause, the shakiness can result in blurry, unfocussed pictures. But thanks to Nikon’s VR system, the pictures you take on your next boat trip will be crisp, ruined as the waters are a little choppy.

The P80 has many advantages over traditional cameras. And one of them is that it can do more than take great pictures. It can also put on tape home movies. Imagine it. You are at your annual family picnic, taking pictures of the festivities when, suddenly, the young at the picnic start to dance. It’s a moment you just be crisp, clear And while taking some pictures would be a great way to do that, you can do even better. So you aim your camera and press record. And, just like that, you aren’t just taking snapshots, you are filming a home movie, complete with sound. Later, all you have to do is connect your camera to your television set, and you can relive that moment as many times as you want. begin to dance. It’s a few of the great features those who buy CoolPix P80 cameras can delight in. In fact, photography buffs will find that discovering each new feature, and learning to use it to its fullest, is part of the joy of owning this exceptional camera.
