Look For A Bettie Page Photograph (here)
Innocent and tempting, arch and teasing, Bettie Page (1923-2008) stands out as the most iconic of all 1950’s pinup girls. Bettie’s killer curves and sparkling eyes adored men’s magazines, advertisements, mail-order photographs, album covers from 1950 to 1957.

While her birth certificate reads "Betty Mae Page," "Bettie" is the form that she used since childhood, and can be seen on autographed merchandise from the 1990s and 2000s. EBay sellers often hedge their bets by referring to her as “Bettie Betty Page in auction listings, furthering the confusion.
Asked for her opinion of modern pinup girls, Bettie has stated that Demi Moore’s celebrity impersonation bears little resemblance to her, and described Madonna as “highly overrated.”

Bettie Page has inspired many contemporary pinup artists, such as Jim Silke, Dave Stevens, and Olivia. I first encountered a fictionalized Bettie Page in Dave Stevens’ “Rocketeer” comic book serial in 1992. The unassuming main character Cliff Secord’s girlfriend Betty was modeled after Betty Page, who at time was known only to vintage pinup retro aficionados. Cliff’s rival for Betty’s affection, the lanky, bearded, beret-wearing pin-up photographer, Irving, could not have been more different from the real-life Irving Klaw.
Throughout the 1940s, Irving Klaw and his sister Paula’s Manhattan-based Movie Star News had been enjoying a brisk business in movie stills, cheesecake photos, and pinups. When Irving noticed the demand for damsel-in-distress movie stills exceed the supply, he began producing his own bondage photos. Paula did most of the photography, and tied the actual knots. To the disappointment of contemporary BDSM enthusiasts, neither the Klaws nor Bettie were into bondage.
The 1954 Senate Subcommittee on Juvenile Delinquency headed by Estes Kefauver (the era’s Tipper Gore) attacked comic books and pornography, trying to linking them with juvenile delinquency. Klaw was subpoenaed and appeared before the Subcommittee on national television, pleading the Fifth to every question. Though Klaw’s bondage photographs did not involve nudity, his entire business was tarred by the association with pornographic, sleazy pinups. Facing social, political, and legal pressures, Klaw retired from the trade. While Klaw attempted to burn all his negatives (succeeding with about 80%), his sister Paula preserved some of the better images, which are available today in collections of vintage pinups.
In 1954, Miami-based former model Bunny Yeager photographed Bettie decorating a Christmas tree, wearing only a Santa hat. Playboy magazine purchased it for their January 1955 issue, yielding one of their most memorable Christmas pinups. A former model herself, Bunny realized Bettie’s full potential as a female pinup model, capturing her as a beach bunny, a leopardskin-clad jungle queen (at the Africa USA wildlife park in Boca Raton), and sun goddess.

But her While Bettie’s religious conversion on New Year’s Eve 1958 is most commonly cited as the reason for her retirement from modeling, other factors include the stigma of the Kefauver investigation, a back injury, a blackmail attempt, using a fake hard-core photo, stalking incidents, and her advancing age.
Richard Foster’s 1997 book “The Real Bettie Page: The Truth about the Queen of the Pinups” suggests that Bettie’s religious fervor unleashed personal demons she had managed to suppress during her professional life.
In the late 60s, the former pinup queen suffered violent mood swings, which doomed her marriage to Harry Lear, her third husband. Upset by the finalization of her divorce from Lear, Bettie was arrested for creating a public disturbance with a .22 pistol in Boca Raton. Though the marriage was over, Lear allowed Bettie to stay in his home with his three children. A few months later, Bettie marched Lear and his three children at knife point before a picture of Jesus, commanding them, "If you take your eyes off this picture, I’ll cut your guts out!” The incident resulted in a four-month stay in a state mental hospital. Generous to a fault, Lear allowed Bettie to return to his home, this time in an addition constructed for her.
In California in 1979, Bettie attacked an elderly couple with a breadknife, necessitating a year- long hospitalization. In 1982, Bettie stabbed her landlady 12 times. The trial for attempted murder resulted in her being ruled insane and institutionalized for ten years.
Bettie disputed the amount of time in mental health facilities, asserting “That book is full of lies. Richard Foster is the devil posing as a human. A monster.”

Probably the most well known pinup artist of all time is Alberto Vargas. He truly was a pioneer of airbrush art, and he is most noted for the obsessively polished look of his pin ups. His Varga Girls are, in my mind, the most famous art work of the pinup art genre.
His career spanned 6 decades!
He began in 1919 and distinguished himself as the official artist of the Ziegfeld Follies. Vargas painted many of their stars including Billie Burke, Paulette Goddard, Eddie Cantor and W.C. Fields.
In the 30’s he became a very well known artist for the Hollywood studios. Some of the leading ladies he painted included Ann Sheridan, Betty Grable, and Marlene Dietrich.
But the transition which brought him to the peak of his career was his contract with Esquire Magazine in the 1940’s. This was when his pin up girls, known as Varga Girls, became household names. His most famous art forms at this time were his pinup calendars and pinup posters .
During the 1950’s Vargas worked for the Hollywood studios again, painting Marilyn Monroe, Jane Russell, Shelley Winters and Ava Gardner. He also issued his own deck of Vargas Girl playing cards, called "Vargas Vanities. During this period he also did his own variation of nude painting for Playboy Magazine and Hugh Hefner.

He continued to work until his death in 1982. Probably his most famous art work among modern audiences is his Candy-O album cover for the band The Cars. His work is greatly prized by collectors, and his pinups are widely reproduced today. I even own a set of Varga Girl refrigerator magnets!

Stacy Lande is a Los Angeles based artist, and her pin up art is most often placed in the lowbrow category. Her new website, about all things pinup, can be viewed at http://www.i-love-pin-up-girls.com. Her book, THE RED BOX, from Last Gasp press, features introductions from Robert Williams and Frank Kozik. Stacy has had a lifelong obsession with pin up girls, and her erotic paintings explore the more allegorical side of pinups. Her subjects are femme fatales and devil girls, and her fascination with the succubus has prompted her work to be described as "predatory pinups". Stacy’s paintings have been featured in magazine articles, notably Juxtapoz, Detour, and Hot Rod Deluxe; films, notably Gone in 60 Seconds starring Angelina Jolie and Nicholas cage; and art books, such as Weirdo Deluxe, from Chronicle Books, and Vicious, Delicious, and Ambitious, from Schiffer Books. Before we talk about the curvy, swervy, plus-size-bikini-clad Hilda, the stage is going to be set with a little history of the pin up girl. I’ll take you back in time now, with a short story about a few of the most talented and popular Pin Up illustrators in American history.

Earl Christy, (1883-1961)
We’ll begin with the prolific Earl Christy, who’s porcelain-doll-like illustrations appeared on everything from Hollywood magazine covers and commercial advertisements to sheet music and postcards. His work can be found going back as early as 1906. His movie posters and covers he painted for "Photoplay" and other Hollywood magazines are now valuable collector items.
Earl Moran (1893-1984)
Earl Moran’s artistic genius appeared on everything from Sears and Roebuck catalogs to Life magazine and millions of Brown and Bigelow Calendars. How he’s remembered most is through his pin ups. Moran’s stunningly rendered pastel "visions" offer more situational variety than any other major illustrator. Of his most enduring legacies are his 1940s paintings of a breathtaking
young model named Norma Jean Baker. He painted more images of her than any other artist.
Rolf Armstrong (1889-1960)
Rolf Armstrong was another famous Brown and Bigelow calendar artist. After arriving home from a trip to France in 1919, he opened a studio in Greenwich Village where he painted the Ziegfeld Folly girls. Later, while in Hollywood, all the great stars of the era posed for him. Popular actresses like Mary Pickford, Greta Garbo, Marlene Dietrich and Katherine Hepburn were all painted by him. He even talked Boris Karloff into posing for him on the set of the original "Frankenstein".
He refused to work from photographs and was always on the quest for the perfect model. When asked why he preferred a live model over a photograph, he said, "I want the living person in front of me. As I look at her again and again and again while I work, I get a thousand fresh, vivid impressions… all the glow, exuberance, and spontaneous joy that leaps from a young and happy heart."
Armstrong’s pastel pin ups of his idealized, scantily clad,"girl next door" have a distinctive, luminous and shimmering quality to them. His paintings of healthy, nubile young women are some of the most memorable of all the famous illustrators. He was truly a man of rarefied talent.
George Petty (1894-1975)
The Pin Up finally exploded into the popular culture with Esquire Magazine’s introduction of s"Petty Girl" in 1933. Slender, flirtatious and extremely shapely, the Petty Girl became an American institution, capturing our hearts and minds for more than twenty years. From 1933 to 1956, her images were seen in tens of millions of places; every where from magazines and billboards to playing cards and match books, even aircraft "nose art" in WWII. In 1950, she was made into a movie starring Robert Cummings and Elsa Lanchester.
Gil Elvgren (1914-1980)
No pin up gallery is complete without displaying the breathtaking talent of Gil Elvgren. His enchanting, dreamy renderings of the nubile female form cannot be eclipsed in genius by any other artist. He was sublimely talented! A student of the Minneapolis Art Institute, he liked to paint girls who were new to the modeling business. He believed the ideal pin up was a girl with
a fifteen year old face on a twenty year old body, so he combined the two. During the forty two years spanning 1930-1972, he produced over five hundred paintings of beautiful young women, nearly all painted on oil and canvas. Today, his fully developed, finished works of art are second only in value to the paintings of Alberto Vargas.
Alberto Vargas (1896-1982)
The most prolific and famous glamor illustrator of all time is Alberto Vargas. The son of Max Vargas, a famous and talented photographer in his own right, Alberto learned to airbrush from his father before he was a teen. Most don’t realize he was actually born in Peru, and didn’t come to the US until 1916. He arrived on Ellis Island via Europe, where he had been since 1911. While
there, he had studied in both Geneva and Zurich, and by the time had made his way here, he was already a gifted talent coming into bloom. Within three years he had hung his own shingle and was painting store fronts and window displays for New York City merchants.
One warm afternoon in May 1916, while painting a window display for a downtown merchant, he was approached by a employee of the Ziegfeld Follies and asked to show his work to the great Ziegfeld himself. Within forty eight hours, he was commissioned to paint 12 portraits of the leading stars of the 1919 season of the Ziegfeld Follies. They were for the lobby of the New Amsterdam Theatre.
From that first commission on, Alberto Vargas was an artist in high demand.
He painted every major star of the Ziegfeld Follies and later major Hollywood stars like Betty Grable, Jane Russell, Ann Sheridan, Ava Gardner Linda Darnell, Marlene Dietrich, Loretta Young, and even Marilyn Monroe all posed for him.
In 1940 he replaced the great George Petty at Esquire magazine and by 1945 was the most famous glamor illustrator in the world.
Baby boomers all know him as the creator of Playboy Magazine’s Vargas Girl. He painted over 150 of his Vargas Girl masterpieces for Playboy.
He was married over forty years to the love of his life, Anna Mae Clift. When she passed away in 1974, he lost most of his creative drive and worked just a few more times doing The Cars "Candy O" album cover and two album covers for Bernadette Peters. He passed away in Los Angeles in December, 1982.
Now, the reason this article was written…to talk about the most shapely, wondrously round, perfectly proportioned, plus size, pear shaped beauty in Pin Up girl history: Duane Bryers’ "Hilda"
One night, while prowling "Google Images" for curvaceous content, I found myself at Les Toil’s Big Beautiful Pin Up Gallery. I clicked through and followed his fun and curiously titled links looking for the well-nourished, feminine imagery I had started out that night looking for.
After I got done admiring Les’ talent, I went back to his homepage and clicked on a cheerful teal and yellow banner with the name "Hilda" written across it. I clicked on it, not prepared at all for what I was about to see.
As soon as the page opened, I stopped and looked in wonder. It was one of those moments when you’re seeing something with which you’re completely taken; the world around you seems to disappear, and everything goes completely silent as your focus narrows, taking in what’s in front of you.
Discovering Hilda was like discovering lost treasure. I recognized her right away. I remembered her as a perfect likeness of what I had for years idealized in the feminine form; round, soft, pear-shaped, plump, and shapely to the extreme.
If one’s natural male instinct is to respond to the rounder, softer, more generously proportioned woman, you will understand why there is so much to like about her. From her long, soft legs, girlish face, plump, inviting arms, to her hips, round and wide, you see a vision of femininity forming in front of you. Add to all that her ample, well-developed breasts, soft, yielding tummy and glorious hip-waist ratio, and you discover she is an ideal example of full-figure perfection. The perfect plus size, pear-shaped,
nubile beauty.
Unlike the stick-thin, female icons so popular today, Hilda has not one angular feature. She sublimely embodies the old fashioned womanly ideals of "round and soft". She is feminine to the nth degree.
Duane Bryers was the first illustrator to use plus size models as subjects in his pin up art. Sometimes he didn’t use a model at all and painted from memory or fantasy. A feat, according to pin up artist Les Toil, "most impressive!"

‘Cleanliness is the invention of a sick mind’ - this is the poster which decorated the walls of my bachelor pad which was shared by 3 of us. We three bachelors were very lazy when it came to keeping the flat clean.

Posters are used as a tool to convey a message by protestors, advertisers, special groups and individuals who want to convey their message to one and all in a text or graphical presentation. The younger generation use posters as a low cost decorative material.
For centuries, the government and the entertainment industry of the bygone era used purely text posters as a medium to proclaim their message to the public.
The advent of colour lithography saw a surge in the use of posters printed in bright colours and with illustrations. Even though this concept was first developed in the 1890s in France, it soon spread through out Europe. Find more info at www.madaboutposters.info
Poster art created by noted artists such as Jules Cheret and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec caught the fancy of the people of that era. The posters with artistic merit including posters advertising Colonial Exhibitions and World Fairs were collected by connoisseurs.
The rise of protest movements and pop arts in the 1960s saw the creation of great posters. The ‘Evenements’ of May 1968 posters by a French student was one of the best acclaimed posters of the era.
Posters were used as a tool for recruitment during the first and second world wars. Posters carrying the messages ‘Uncle Sam Wants You’ or ‘Loose Lips Sink Ships’ persisted in the national consciousness during the war period.
Posters produced by Britain during the World War 2, gives an indication of the importance placed on them by the Government to reach the public. While some of the posters of propaganda were displayed outside through street hoardings, the rest were designed for interior display in factories, offices, pubs and shops.
Recent decades saw the popularity of the Pin-Up girl posters. Soldiers in the World War 2 were fascinated by the pin-up posters of Jane Russell and Betty Grable. Late 1970s and early 1980s saw the popularity of television actresses rising through the pin up posters.

To sell their pictures the film industry quickly adapted the display of brightly colored film posters in strategic locations. Soon, film enthusiasts started collecting these vibrantly coloured film posters.
Nowadays due to the short life of films in theatres, posters advertising films shrunk in size and are no longer preserved as a collectors item.

‘Suitcase girl’ turned Playboy pin-up testifies about moment that ignited political scandal

The ‘Suitcase girl ‘ who discovered $800,000 in cash and ignited a political scandal across South America - then capitalized on it to forge a career as a Playboy pin-up - has relived her moment of glory in a Miami courtroom.
Mara del Lujn Telpuk, 28, an Argentinian former airport security officer, is testifying in court about the moment she intercepted a suitcase and provoked a row between the governments of Argentina, Venezuela and the US. Claims of high-level corruption, cover-ups and vendettas have followed and commentators have dubbed the scandal ‘Maletagate’; maleta is Spanish for suitcase.
The furore catapulted Telpuk to stardom as a glamor model, dancer and television celebrity. Telpuk, who promptly underwent breast augmentation surgery, has since appeared on the cover of several magazines, including the Argentinian edition of Playboy in which she appears naked, holding a suitcase, under the headline ‘Corruption Laid Bare’.
She told a Miami court on Friday what happened at Buenos Aires airport on the night of 4 August, 2007, when passengers disembarked from a flight chartered by Venezuela’s state oil company, PDVSA.
Telpuk asked a Venezuelan-American businessman, Guido Alejandro Antonini Wilson, what was in his suitcase. ‘At first he said books,’ she told the court. ‘Then he said "just some papers".’ Antonini’s demeanor changed when she ordered him to open it. ‘He became serious and he was staring me straight in the eye. That’s when I got a suspicion that something was going on,’ said Telpuk. It was packed with wads of $50 bills.
Prosecutors allege that it was a clandestine payment from Venezuela’s President Hugo Chvez to the election campaign of Cristina Kirchner, a left-wing ally who was sweeping to Argentina’s presidency.
Both leaders have dismissed the accusation as an attempt by Washington to smear two governments which have challenged ‘gringo hegemony’ in Latin America.
Telpuk has testified in the trial of Franklin Durn, a wealthy Venezuelan businessman who is accused of acting as an illegal agent for his government. He and four others were arrested in Miami after allegedly pressuring Antonini, who resides in Key Biscayne, Florida, to conceal the truth about where the money came from.
The unusual nature of the charge and the elaborate FBI sting - Antonini co-operated with the Bureau - has prompted widespread speculation that the trial is a politically motivated attempt to embarrass Washington’s enemy, President Chvez.
After finishing her testimony next week, Telpuk is expected to return to Argentina, where she is training to become a professional ice-skater to participate in the Skating for a Dream television show.

Greece is mounting a nationwide effort to remove "eye candy" billboards from roadsides, amid growing evidence that images of women wearing not very much contribute to Europe’s worst road accident figures.

With 15,000 hoardings in the capital alone, drivers are distracted by "unacceptable levels of eye candy", say campaigners who have convinced the courts to rule that all roadside adverts be dismantled.
Billboards invariably depict svelte females in outre poses. "Many of them not only hide traffic lights and road signs, they are put up illegally," said an Athens traffic police official.
"We believe they are the cause of 10% of all accidents in the city."
Driving in Greece is not for the faint-hearted. More than 2,000 people die on the roads annually; another 4,000 are seriously injured in 22,000 car accidents a year - one every 24 minutes.
The Foreign and Commonwealth Office in London even highlights the issue in its travel advice for Greece.
This month, drivers faced a new highway code, with fines of up to 700 (490) for ignoring a stop sign or running through a red light.
The adverse effects of billboards have been highlighted due to the efforts of an Athenian lawyer, Athanasios Tsiokos, who killed his son when he crashed into a billboard on a busy avenue in the capital. He has since campaigned to punish advertising companies, and this year his complaint was upheld by the State Council, which ordered the billboards removed.
Municipalities have begun dismantling them. "This is an issue of public safety and it only happens in our country," said Aris Stathakis, MP for the ruling New Democracy party. "All the dangerous advertising billboards have to be removed."
The campaign has not been easy. Corrupt local government officials have long ensured that billboards have flourished. Recently, campaigners have woken up to find that those removed frequently have been re-erected overnight.

Theda Bara. Dorothy Lamour. Betty Grable. Jean Harlow. Vivien Leigh. Greta Garbo. Elizabeth Taylor. Jayne Mansfield. Twiggy. Farrah Fawcett. And, of course, the magnificent Marilyn Monroe.

They came from different eras, from 1910 until the 1960’s. They were beautiful, alluring, and represented the ‘ultimate woman.’ Pin-up girls were posters that represented every man’s dream of the perfect woman! These pin-ups graced the lockers of high school boys, calendars, and the American soldiers of World War II’s bunk rooms. Far from home, the G.I.’s treasured pin-up girl posters; they gave the soldiers something beautiful and sexy to see instead of their all-male comrades, not to mention the misery and graphic violence of war. Army Air Corps pilots, who risked their lives every day, developed ‘nose art’ that was beautifully painted upon the outside cockpit of their fighter, bomber or cargo airlift planes. In addition to stunning depictions of fierce, snarling animals like tigers, eagles and sharks, pin-up girls frequently graced the noses of U.S. aircraft. And in 1941, test pilot Chuck Yeager first broke the sound barrier in a jet he decorated with a gorgeous pin-up of his wife, naming the plane ‘Glamorous Glynnis.’

In 1947, the Army Air Corps officially became the United States Air Force. Nose art, especially that of vintage pin-up girls, continued to grace the outside cock pits of the best and fastest aircraft in the world. But times change, as does ‘political correctness.’ Thirty years later, in the beginnings of awareness of the sexual harassment and exploitation of women, nose art was officially banned by the USAF, and this pin-up art vanished forever. It’s only seen now in museums depicting the lives of servicemen in ages gone by.

Several sources cite the top three pin-up girls as Betty Grable posing provocatively in a one-piece bathing suit, Marilyn Monroe’s revealing skirt ‘blow up’ from The Seven Year Itch, and Farrah Fawcett as she appeared in TV’s ‘Charlie’s Angels.’ But it doesn’t end with the beautiful and sensual pin-up girls; the past decade has given us pin-up men as well! Handsome heartthrobs Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt and Fabio adorn the walls of many a teenage girl’s bedroom. Also popular in modern pin-up art are rock singers Ozzy Osbourne, Zakk Wylde, Steven Tyler, and the enormously popular cross-over group, the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
Pin-up art reached its heyday during World War II, and art experts say that it will never quite be the same again. During this time, every female star in Hollywood had aspirations of becoming a popular pin-up art subject; this was part of their formula to successful movie careers. Today you can find vintage pin-ups on the Internet that are of fine quality and evoke memories of days long gone.

When the new technology of photography appeared around 1835 it was quickly taken up by artists, eager for new ways to illustrate the undraped feminine form. In the moral climate of the 19th century the only officially sanctioned photography of the body was for the production of artist’s studies.
Prior to 1835 pictures of the nude form generally consisted of paintings and drawings which were displayed in all respectability on the walls of art galleries and in country houses

Pinup, glamour, and ‘cheesecake’ began to gain popularity in the 1930s. It was a time when the image of a pretty girl flourished. Glamour photography has changed over time as the female form, portrayed in art and photography became more provocative.
During World War II pin-up pictures of scantily clad movie stars were extremely popular among US servicemen. Whether it was a painted calendar, advertisement, or the photo pinups that the G.I.s pinned on their locker doors, and which later adorned the noses of their bomber planes in WW2.

Famous illustrators like Petty, Rolf Armstrong, and Gil Evgren began creating some of the most memorable, technically exquisite Americana` ever produced! Calendars, magazine covers and matchbooks became a personal view into the life of the girl next door.
However, until the 1950s, the use of glamour photography in advertising or men’s magazines was highly controversial or sometimes even illegal.
Magazines featuring glamour photography were sometimes marketed as "art magazines" or "health magazines". Pinup art continued to grow in popularity, and sophistication through the 1950s. Movies were made about Pinup Artists and models, and most actresses of the time were considered pinups first then actresses.
Marilyn Monroe was Earl Morans’ favorite model before and after she became a movie star! Numerous celebrities posed for pinup and glamour artists.

Playboy was instrumental in changing the world of glamour photography as the first magazine that focused on nude models and was targeted at the mainstream consumer. In December 1953, Hugh Hefner published the first edition of Playboy with Marilyn Monroe on the cover and nude photos of Monroe inside.
Monroe’s star status and charming personality helped to diminish the public outcry. When asked what she had on during the photoshoot, she replied "the radio". After Playboy broke through, many magazines followed and this was instrumental in opening the market for the introduction of glamour photography into our modern society.
